The "turn-back" muscle is as important to hone and engage as any physical sinew in our bodies. As they say, "The summit is optional, but the parking lot is mandatory." You've stood on the top of the world already and know that it will still be there whenever you desire to return. Last year I had to turn back on a 4-day trip in Oregon after just the first day, because of a wildfire. But that's hiking in the West for ya. Every time you go out, there's a chance that the elements (including fire) will make you think your way through the hike and adjust expectations. Sucks having the fires when at Lake Hamilton and especially at Precipice Lake. I was up there a week ago in similar conditions except that the air was crystal clear. The frozen Precipice Lake is a sight to behold. Awesome scenery.
